بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allaah, and may salutations and peace be upon Muhammad, his family, his companions and all those that follow them.

As for what follows:

Allaah mentions in the story of Musa عليه السلام how He told his mother to throw him in the water:

“And We inspired the mother of Musa (Moses), (saying): ‘Suckle him [Musa (Moses)], but when you fear for him, then cast him into the river and fear not, nor grieve. Verily! We shall bring him back to you, and shall make him one of (Our) Messengers.'” [28:7]

Allaah promised the mother of Musa that He would return to her, her son. Allaah said:

“Verily! We shall bring him back to you, and shall make him one of (Our) Messengers.”

And further in the Surah, Allaah says:

“So did We restore him to his mother, that she might be delighted, and that she might not grieve, and that she might know that the Promise of Allah is true. But most of them know not.” [28:13]

Meaning, most people are ignorant. When Allaah promises something, the majority of the people do not live as though it is the Truth from their Lord. Their hearts do not truly see its truth and how it most certainly will come to pass.

Just as Allaah fulfilled his promise to the mother of Musa, we should bear in mind the promise stated on the tongue of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم when he said:

“إنك لَن تدَع شيئًا للهِ عزَّ وجلَّ إلا بدَلك اللهُ به ما هو خيرٌ لكَ منه”
“You will not leave anything for  the sake of Allaah except that He will substitute it for you with that which is better than it” [Narrated by Imam Ahmad, authenticated by Al Albani.]

This is something certain; clear, without a doubt. But most of the people do not know, because if they knew for sure and had strong faith in this matter then they would leave many things. Why? Because everyone looks for better in their lives. Everyone wants a better house, better clothes, a better car, more knowledge etc. Everyone is in pursuit of this. No one wants to be in plain poverty and misery. Everyone wants good, and no one wants bad for himself.

So leave what you can for the sake of Allaah and know that you will receive that which is better. The person that leaves cigarettes for the sake of Allaah, will get something better. Allaah may give him better health or fix his breathing. Even some things that might be considered small by many people such as a man that wears a necklace/chain, which he leaves for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will give him something better. If he leaves a Haram relationship, Allaah will give him better, in the form of a wife and family. If he leaves an immoral friend that his mother doesn’t like, Allaah will replace with friends that are better and more righteous. This applies in everything.

If the person realised that the promise of Allaah is true and lives according to that, by Allaah, he would leave many things for His sake. Because his Lord has promised him that if he leaves something for Him, whether big or small, He will give him better.

And Allaah knows best.
