The ruling of “Idara” of the Qur’an:

The “Idara” of the Qur’an includes types, among which is that a group sit down to revise the Qur’an and one of them reads a little; a juz’, a page, an ayah or more, then the next person continues from where the former had stopped and so on.

Shaikhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said:

“The “Idarah” way of reciting is good according to most of the scholars” الفتاوى الكبرى5/345

Al Nawawi رحمه الله said in al Tibyan:

“Chapter regarding the “Idarah” of Qur’an: and it is that a group gather while one of them recites a tenth or a Juz’ or other than that then remains silent and the next one continues from where the first has stopped, and this is a permissible, good thing, and Malik رحمه الله was asked about it and he said: No problem with it.”

This is the opinion of the majority of the scholars regarding this type of Idarah, while in the Maddhab of the Hanabilah they stated that it is Makrooh(disliked). Those who said it was good quoted the known narrations in the virtue of sitting to study the Qur’an as this is a way of studying it. They also stated that it is similar to what Jibreel عليه السلام did with the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم when he revised the Qur’an with him which is the second type of Idarah. This is whereby one person recites an ayah or a part of the Qur’an and the second one repeats after him and this is not makrooh according to the Hanabilah themselves and the rest of the Madhahib. The Hanabilah said in their explanations of Ghayat al muntaha:

“…and our companions disliked the recitation of idara; Harb said it is good and it is that a reciter reads, then stops, then another one reads, meaning what is after his recitation. As for if he repeated what the first has recited then it is not Makrooh because Jibreel used to revise with the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم the Qur’an in Ramadan.)” Matalib Ulil Nuha 1/598

They (the Hanabilah) said in Kishaf al Qina’ 1/432:

“But if he repeated what the first one recited then it should not be said that it is makrooh.”

What is stronger is that there is no difference between repeating what the first has recited and continuing from where he stopped and that both are permissible.

Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen رحمه الله said about Idarah:

“It means that they sit in a circle and the recitation circulates amongst them, in a way that one of them recites a Juz’ (or a part), then the second recites the second Juz’ (or a part), then the third (recites) the third Juz’ (or part) or a page or a paper or the second reciter repeats. Or those who are after him (repeat) what the first one recited then all of that is fine, because most of what is in it, is that they help each other and kick away boredom from themselves and there is no problem with that.” Liqa al bab al maftooh 37/7

(Note: in Arabic a “page” is two sides of the Qur’an and a “paper” is one side)

Also he (Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen) said in an audio available on the net:

“There is no problem that a group gathers after duhur, maghrib, or asr and they recite together 10 pages from the Qur’an but not all at the same time, rather one of them reads and the others listen and the second reads and the others listen and so on.”

There came in the fatwah of the Lajnah:

“As for if each one recited for himself (alone), or they revise together whereby one finishes then another one recites and they all listen to him, then this is from the greatest of means to get closer (to Allah)

From the benefits of this research is realizing that the earlier Scholars did not differentiate between the number of Ayat recited and this is what is shown from the answers of Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen and the Lajnah. It depends therefore on the way of studying, the ability of those in the group to be patient and concentrate till his turn comes, and the recitation or memorization of the group. For example for children, they may not have the patience to wait for an entire Juz’ for their turn but an adult may be able to wait while maintaining his concentration, wAllahu a’lam ..
