Allaah says:
And Fir’aun (Pharaoh), and those before him, and the cities overthrown [the towns of the people of [Lout (Lot)] committed sin, They disobeyed their Lord’s Messenger, so He punished them with a strong punishment. Verily! When the water rose beyond its limits [Nuh’s (Noah) Flood], We carried you (mankind) in the floating [ship that was constructed by Nuh (Noah)].
“That We might make it for you a reminder and [that] a conscious ear would be  conscious of it.” [Surat Al-Haqqah 69:9-12]
These ayat mention a great story, that should be a reminder for all; to stay away from shirk and sins, one should also notice how the singular for ear is used ‘udhun’. Although the person that hears an admonition most definitely listens with both ears. This is because those that receive admonition and act upon their knowledge are very few. Those that believe wholeheartedly in Allaah, and His Oneness and follow strictly what He ordained in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah are a minority. We see the opposite of this in another ayah where Allaah says:
“And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.” [Surat Al-A’raaf 7:179]
The words used for the hearts, eyes and ears here are in the plural form, and this is because the people that disbelieve are many. Those that reject the aayaat (miracles, signs, verses, evidences and proofs) of Allaah, belie His Messengers and oppose His Oneness are abundant as Allaah said:
“And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah . They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying.” [Surat Al-An’aam 6:116]
